my equipment

Photos on this site have been taken with one of three cameras:

Nikon Coolpix 995
This camera has an excellent macro function. I also use it for 'digiscoping', with either a Leica Apo Televid 62 or Apo Televid 77 telescope, and 16x eyepiece (20x when used on the 77). The DA-1 adapter has proved itself invaluable.

Getting the Coolpix 995 in 2003 was a turning point for me; it made me start looking for stuff to take photos of, which meant I began looking in more detail at the world around me. I've always been a bit arty but the trusty Coolpix gave me renewed enthusiasm and confidence.

Canon EOS 30D
In March 2007 I clambered aboard the digital SLR bandwagon. So far, 'only' one lens, a 300mm f4 (image-stabilised), and a 1.4 converter. Thanks to those who have given me advice on using it: Steve, Graham, Mike and Kevin.

Canon Powershot A640
I bought this compact camera in early 2008

me

I've been interested in birds and wildlife from an early age; going on YOC field trips from age 11 really sealed it for me. My formative birding was done near my mum's allotment and down at our local country park. I've since been birding all over the UK, with other trips to Greece (Lesvos), France (the Camargue/Alpilles), Spain (Andalucia) and The Gambia. More travel to come in the future, hopefully.

Went to university to study journalism, which proved a waste of time and money. Then, from 2000 to 2005, I was a sub-editor for Bird Watching magazine, 'the UK's best-selling wild bird magazine'. I now work for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) on their website.

I spend my spare time indulging my passions for birding, photographing backlit leaves, blogging, music, trying to sketch, primitive web design (which you're looking at now), genealogy (no aristocratic blood in my family tree, only peasants), doing a bit of writing, mowing the lawn and trying to grow vegetables.
