26.01.2005. Original blog post.

This was quite good fun. Went to check out a site for Water Rail where someone has been baiting the birds for photographic purposes (the site will remain anonymous for now!). We didn't really expect success on a lunchtime visit, with people and dogs walking about, but birds often do things you don't expect!

This Water Rail showed comparatively well as it fed among the fallen reeds. It wasn't an easy bird to digiscope, though. The aforementioned reeds were often in the way and it was a battle to get the camera's auto-focus to get on the bird. A bit of scope focus-fiddling was needed, but it was hard while the rail was feeding and moving about so actively. The midday light was also quite harsh though the bird's actual surrounding were rather dark. Digiscoping wouldn't be so enjoyable if it were always easy...

What a great name the Italian Porciglione is...
